Chemical Peels,
Facials & Skin Care

Our London, Ontario, practice is known for customizing skincare solutions for patients with a range of different concerns. DermEffects’ board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Wei Jing Loo, and her team of aesthetic skincare specialists offer a menu of treatments that includes customized facials and chemical peels of varying strengths to address your specific needs.

DermEffects offers pampering facials and cleansing chemical peels using SkinCeuticals, our professional-grade skincare line.

Chemical Peels

Mild and moderate medical-grade chemical peels using alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) penetrate deep into the skin, removing impurities and dead skin cells. Peels can improve the skin’s appearance without the downtime of more aggressive peels when performed by our licensed esthetician. We also offer laser skin resurfacing treatments as alternatives to chemical peels.

Pigment Balancing Peel (AHA)

This peel is specifically designed for individuals concerned with hyperpigmentation, signs of aging, and superficial skin imperfections—regardless of skin type. It will aid in fading dark spots, improve skin tone and radiance, diminish fine lines, and improve overall laxity of the complexion.

Skincare Expertise in Southwest Ontario

Under the medical supervision of Dr. Loo, DermEffects’ highly skilled team of injectors and estheticians serves patients from:

  • London
  • Sarnia
  • Chatham-Kent
  • Cambridge
  • Waterloo
  • Bayfield
  • Grand Bend

MicroPeel Plus (AHA)

We can customize this peel for use on all skin types and sensitivities to specifically treat initial signs of aging, pigmentation, and mild skin imperfections. It will improve overall skin tone, diminish fine lines, and reveal a beautiful, radiant complexion.

Carbon Spectra Peel + Vitamin C Under Low-Level Light Therapy (Healite)

The Carbon Spectra Peel is a painless, no downtime, highly requested procedure that instantly creates a radiant, glowing appearance.

It’s ideal for all skin types and those wanting to improve skin tone and texture.

  • Reveals glowing, youthful skin
  • Reduces fine lines
  • Smooths, softens skin
  • Stimulates collagen

The laser works in two ways:

  1. It targets the melanin (pigmentation) in the cells then breaks it up to be removed naturally.
  2. It heats deep into the dermis, causing the skin to contract and stimulate collagen regeneration.

During your treatment a light layer of Spectra carbon lotion is applied to your skin. This needs 5 to 10 minutes to set. One pass of the laser sets the carbon onto the skin.

Patients will hear a snapping sound when the laser is fired and will feel a slight tingling or warming sensation as the laser removes the carbon along with the stratum corneum (top layer of skin and dead skin cells on the surface of the skin).

After the skin is cleansed of any remaining carbon, a Vitamin C mask is applied from our SkinCeuticals skincare product line to the treatment area. This is followed by our Healite (red light therapy) treatment.

This pain-free and non-invasive treatment delivers concentrated energy deep into your tissue to affect your body at a cellular level.

This is a great treatment for subsiding active acne and promoting skin rejuvenation. This treatment can be used as a standalone therapy or can be combined with nearly any other procedure to enhance the effects of healing and speed recovery.

Facials

Maintaining healthy, vibrant skin involves limiting sun exposure, staying hydrated, and using high-quality skincare products. Even if you diligently follow these habits, though, your skin can benefit from periodic facials performed by an aesthetic specialist. At DermEffects, we offer a variety of facial treatments that can address different skin concerns.

Reconditioning & Anti-Aging Facial

This treatment is ideal for dehydrated and aging skin, in addition to skin damaged by sun exposure and other environmental conditions. We use specific cleansing, toning, masque, and protective products that help your skin appear firmer and healthier.

Calming Facial for Rosacea or Sensitive Skin

We customized this facial to address the unique needs of patients with sensitive skin or who have rosacea. This facial reduces redness and flushing, alleviates discomfort, and helps reinforce the skin’s barrier function. It provides cooling, soothing relief for sensitive skin while improving the appearance of rosacea.

Deep Pore Treatment & Anti-Acne Facial

This facial is perfect for clients experiencing congested pores, including teenagers and young adults. It combines products to help reduce the skin’s oil production, draw out impurities, and minimize inflammation associated with acne.

Other Skin Care Products & Treatments

Our cosmetic and medical dermatology practice offers comprehensive skincare treatments, which include advanced skincare products that both protect healthy skin and correct skin conditions.

We recommend skincare products that include medical-grade, topical, antioxidant serums, which are important year-round to help fight free radical skin damage from the environment.

SkinCeuticals®

One of the most respected skincare product lines, SkinCeuticals is designed to prevent future skin damage and correct previous damage. These science-based products address a range of concerns for all skin types. These concerns include acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, dryness, and aging.

Colorescience®

Colorescience blurs the line between makeup and skin care using completely natural, healthy cosmetics that protect and beautify your skin. The pure mineral makeup can be used on all skin types, even if you have acne, rosacea, or sun damage.

Eyelash Enhancement

DermEffects offers a prescription-only solution for patients who want fuller, longer eyelashes. The medication bimatoprost gradually encourages the growth of longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes. It is applied along the lash line of the upper eyelashes and works when used daily for at least 2 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a medical-grade peel?

A medical-grade peel is a professionally administered treatment that uses carefully selected ingredients to exfoliate and renew the skin. Depending on your concerns, the treatment may use an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), such as glycolic acid, or a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), such as salicylic acid.

Medical-grade peels can help improve concerns such as acne, congestion, dullness, uneven texture, fine lines and pigmentation. Each treatment is selected according to your skin type, concerns and goals and is performed under professional clinical supervision.

DermEffects offers three professional treatments tailored to different skin concerns:

  1. Glycolic Peel — for aging, dull or uneven skin

Glycolic acid is an AHA that exfoliates the surface of the skin. It can help improve dullness, uneven texture, fine lines and the appearance of pigmentation, leaving the skin smoother and brighter.

  1. Salicylic Peel — for oily, congested or acne-prone skin

Salicylic acid is a BHA that can travel into oily pores to help remove excess oil, dead skin cells and congestion. It is particularly beneficial for acne, blackheads and oily skin.

  1. Dermeclat — for hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone

Dermeclat is a professional topical depigmentation treatment designed to reduce mild-to-severe pigmentation while improving the skin’s overall tone and luminosity. It works by helping inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production.

A medical depigmenting mask is applied in the clinic and remains on the skin for a prescribed period based on the patient’s skin type. The mask is removed at home and followed by a maintenance cream to continue the pigmentation-correcting process. A touch-up treatment may be recommended approximately four to six weeks later.

Dermeclat is more accurately described as an advanced depigmentation treatment rather than a traditional chemical peel.

Despite its name, a Carbon Spectra Peel is not a chemical peel. It is a laser-based facial treatment that combines a topical carbon lotion with the Spectra Q-switched Nd laser.

A thin layer of carbon lotion is applied to the skin, where it settles over the surface and into the pores. The laser is then passed over the treatment area. The carbon absorbs the laser energy and is gently vaporized, helping remove surface debris, dead skin cells and excess oil.

The treatment can help:

  • Reduce excess oil and congestion
  • Improve the appearance of enlarged pores
  • Support the treatment of acne-prone skin
  • Smooth uneven skin texture
  • Brighten and refresh the complexion

Downtime varies depending on the treatment selected, its strength and your individual skin response.

Glycolic and salicylic peels generally involve little to no social downtime. You may experience temporary redness, tightness, dryness or light flaking for several days as the skin renews itself.

A Carbon Spectra Peel typically involves little to no social downtime. Most patients can return to their usual activities immediately after treatment.

The skin may appear mildly red, warm or sensitive for several hours. Some patients may also experience temporary dryness or light flaking. These effects are generally mild and resolve quickly.

Daily sunscreen and gentle skincare are important following treatment. Your DermEffects provider will give you personalized aftercare instructions based on your skin and treatment settings.

Relax under the light while your skin gets to work.

HEALITE II™ is a gentle, non-invasive 830-nm near-infrared LED light treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to support the skin’s natural repair and renewal processes.

The light energy works below the skin’s surface without creating heat or causing injury. It can help calm visible redness and inflammation, support healing, improve skin recovery and promote a healthier, more refreshed-looking complexion.

HEALITE II™ can be enjoyed on its own or added to treatments such as chemical peels, laser procedures and injectables to support comfort and recovery.

HEALITE II™ can help with:

  • Calming redness and visible inflammation
  • Supporting skin healing and recovery
  • Reducing post-treatment discomfort
  • Improving the appearance of stressed or compromised skin
  • Supporting overall skin rejuvenation
  • Complementing other medical-aesthetic treatments

Treatments are comfortable, relaxing and generally take approximately 10 to 20 minutes. There is no downtime following a standalone HEALITE II™ session, so you can return to your regular activities immediately.

No needles. No heat. No downtime—just clinically guided light therapy designed to help your skin look and feel its best.

Your skin. Your concerns. Your customized formula.

No two complexions are exactly alike—and your facial should not be either. DermEffects Mixology Treatments combine carefully selected SkinCeuticals formulas to create a personalized treatment based on what your skin needs most.

The Acne Elixir

Clear. Calm. Correct.

Created for blemish-prone, congested or inflamed skin, The Acne Elixir targets active breakouts while also addressing the visible marks they may leave behind. Your provider may select products such as Blemish + Age Defense, Phyto Corrective Gel and Discoloration Defense to help reduce congestion, calm visible inflammation and improve the appearance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The result is skin that looks calmer, clearer and more evenly toned.

The Anti-Aging Elixir

Plump. Smooth. Replenish.

The Anti-Aging Elixir is designed to restore the look of volume, gently refine the skin and deliver deeply replenishing hydration. Your customized treatment may feature Ampra alongside advanced SkinCeuticals formulas such as P-TIOX, H.A. Intensifier Multi-Glycan and A.G.E. Interrupter Ultra Serum.

The result is a complexion that appears plumper, smoother, brighter and beautifully refreshed.

The Anti-Redness Elixir

Soothe. Strengthen. Illuminate.

Designed for rosacea-prone, sensitive or visibly red skin, The Anti-Redness Elixir provides a calming blend of corrective hydration and barrier support. Your provider may select products such as Phyto Corrective Gel, Phyto Corrective Masque, Phyto A+ Brightening Treatment and Hydrating B5 Gel to soothe visible redness, reduce the appearance of inflammation and revive a dull or stressed complexion.

The result is skin that looks calmer, more comfortable and naturally radiant.

Every Mixology Treatment begins with a professional skin assessment. Your DermEffects provider will select and layer the most appropriate SkinCeuticals products according to your skin type, sensitivity and treatment goals.

The simplest difference is that a medical peel focuses on resurfacing the skin, while a Mixology Treatment focuses on nourishing and correcting the skin with a customized facial.

Medical-Grade Peels

Resurface. Renew. Correct.

A medical-grade peel uses a professional-strength exfoliating solution to remove damaged or congested surface cells and encourage fresh skin to come forward.

Peels are particularly helpful for treating:

  • Acne and congested pores
  • Uneven texture
  • Fine lines
  • Sun damage
  • Dark spots and pigmentation

Because a peel creates more active exfoliation, the skin may temporarily feel dry, tight or sensitive. Redness and visible flaking or peeling may also occur, depending on the treatment and its strength.

At DermEffects, your provider may recommend a glycolic peel, salicylic peel or Dermeclat depigmentation treatment, depending on your concerns.

SkinCeuticals Mixology Treatments

Customize. Nourish. Enhance.

A Mixology Treatment is a personalized facial that combines and layers selected SkinCeuticals products according to your skin’s needs.

Rather than using one concentrated peeling solution, Mixology Treatments may incorporate gentle exfoliation, corrective serums, soothing products, masks and water-infused hydration.

They are designed to support concerns such as:

  • Acne and post-acne marks
  • Rosacea and visible redness
  • Dehydration and dullness
  • Fine lines and loss of firmness
  • Overall skin maintenance

Mixology Treatments are generally gentler and typically involve little to no downtime. They are ideal when you want your skin to feel refreshed, hydrated and cared for without the more active resurfacing associated with a medical peel.

Which treatment is right for me?

Choose a medical peel when your skin requires deeper exfoliation and more targeted correction.

Choose a Mixology Treatment when your skin needs a customized combination of correction, soothing and hydration with minimal downtime.

Not sure which one to choose? Your DermEffects provider will assess your skin and recommend the treatment best suited to your concerns, sensitivity and goals.
