Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
Using natural substances from your own body appeals to women and men considering platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) at our London, Ontario practice. Traditionally, PRP therapy has been used to help athletes heal more quickly and for other medical purposes, but it’s also becoming a common aesthetic treatment. DermEffects’ board-certified dermatologist Dr. Wei Jing Loo uses PRP therapy to smooth wrinkles, eliminate eye bags, diminish dark circles under the eyes, and treat hair loss.

How PRP Therapy Works
Understanding how PRP therapy helps minimize wrinkles and trigger hair growth involves knowing a bit about platelets. Platelets are a key part of the body’s healing process because they store molecules called growth factors. These growth factors help trigger the rejuvenation of tissue. Plasma that is rich with platelets stimulates collagen production, which helps rejuvenate the skin in a natural way.
For hair restoration patients at our London practice, those same growth factors help naturally stimulate hair growth when Dr. Loo injects the platelet-rich plasma into the scalp. The nonsurgical alternative to hair transplant procedures is popular because it’s faster and less costly than other options.
PRP is a quick and natural way to improve the appearance of your skin or promote hair growth.

What to Expect During PRP Treatment
Dr. Loo performs PRP therapy at our London dermatology clinic. The process begins with drawing your blood, which is then spun in a device called a centrifuge. That process isolates the platelets in the plasma. Dr. Loo then injects the PRP into the treatment site, such as below the eyes, the face, the back of the hands, or the scalp. She applies a topical anesthetic before the injections to ensure you remain comfortable during the procedure. The entire treatment takes about 30 minutes.
Some patients experience minor redness or skin irritation after the injections. The results emerge gradually during the following weeks and months as the PRP growth factors trigger the production of new collagen. Patients getting PRP therapy under the eyes or on the face require 3 sessions. Hair loss treatment requires between 3 and 6 sessions.
PRP Therapy Benefits
The interest in the cosmetic use of PRP therapy continues to increase as patients and physicians observe the positive changes that occur following treatments. Some of the benefits of PRP compared to other skin rejuvenation or hair restoration procedures include:
- It’s well-tolerated because it uses the patient’s own blood.
- Virtually no downtime is needed.
- The treatment is relatively quick and comfortable (hair restoration can take a bit longer).
- You can combine PRP with other treatments if desired.
- It’s a versatile treatment.
Patients seeking PRP for skin rejuvenation can minimize the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, and uneven skin tone, among other concerns.
