Flip or fill? That is the question. Or is it? Lip enhancement treatments remain among the most popular aesthetic procedures performed around the world, and there are numerous options for getting the perfect, pouty appearance. One of the more recent innovative approaches is the BOTOX® “lip flip.” But a lip flip doesn’t necessarily take the place of lip fillers. In fact, they can be complementary treatments.
Questions About Lip Treatments
In this blog post, we’ll answer some of the most common lip enhancement questions we hear from DermEffects patients, including how to know if you’re a better candidate for lip fillers or a lip flip.
What Is a Lip Flip?
A lip flip involves strategically injecting BOTOX into the muscle just above the upper lip. This is the muscle responsible for the upper lip’s movement. BOTOX relaxes the muscle, which results in the lip naturally rolling upward—the “flip.” The subtle change enhances the appearance of the Cupid’s Bow, the curve at the middle of the upper lip.
Is a Lip Flip Better Than Filler?
A lip flip is not necessarily better than filler. A lip flip creates the appearance of more volume without adding volume. Some patients worry that fillers may create an unnatural, “overdone” look. A lip flip produces subtler results and can be the ideal solution for some patients.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Lip Fillers?
Even though a lip flip can create the illusion of additional volume, some patients want their lips to appear fuller than what the BOTOX technique can accomplish. Lip fillers create more dramatic results and, with a skilled injector, will still look natural. Fillers are also effective for reducing fine lines around the mouth and smoothing wrinkled lips.
What Is Best for Thin Lips?
Patients with thin upper lips can benefit from combining lip filler and a lip flip. Filler injections plump the lips but won’t create the slight lift that can give the lip a more attractive shape.
What Filler Is Best for Lip Augmentation?
As we wrote in a previous blog post, several lip fillers are effective for lip augmentation. JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® is designed specifically for lip enhancement. Its thin gel creates subtle results and is ideal for patients who want to create a desirable cupid’s bow contour. Another option is Teosyal Kiss, which is designed to maintain its soft form in the lips for a longer time. Belotero Lips Contour and Belotero Lips Shape are also great fillers to provide the definition and volume needed for beautiful lips with a natural look and feel.
How Do You Get Long-Lasting Results?
One of the advantages of lip fillers is that they provide results for 6 to 8 months. To maintain the results of a BOTOX lip flip, on the other hand, you’ll need treatments about every 3 to 4 months.
Does Lip Filler or a Lip Flip Cost More?
Because only a few units of BOTOX are needed to create a lip flip, the treatment costs less than lip fillers. Of course, it’s important to remember that fillers last much longer than BOTOX, so you’ll need touch-up lip flip treatments more often.
When Can You Kiss After Getting a Lip Flip or Lip Fillers?
Kissing too soon after a lip enhancement treatment may compromise the results. Fillers need at least a day or two to fully integrate with the lip tissue before putting too much pressure on the lips. It’s also a good idea to refrain from kissing for a day after getting a lip flip.
