Laser skin resurfacing is an exceptional way to even out your skin tone, achieve a smoother texture, improve coloration, and smooth away fine lines and wrinkles. Achieving the best results from laser skin resurfacing does take some planning, as you may need several sessions with some downtime in between to see your best results.
In this blog post, I’ll share a few tips for planning your laser skin resurfacing timeline, from how to prepare for your treatment to how long it will take to see a difference in your skin.
How Should I Prepare for a Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment?
You can prepare for your laser skin resurfacing treatment by following these steps:
- Minimize sun exposure and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen in the weeks leading up to your appointment.
- Let us know if you have a history of cold sores so we can start you on an antiviral medication.
- Avoid chemical peels and other exfoliating treatments for 4 weeks before.

How Long Is Recovery After Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Recovery time varies depending on the type of laser used and the intensity of your treatment. Some laser skin rejuvenation options, such as Laser Genesis and IPL, have little to no downtime outside of some initial redness. Other options, such as fractional resurfacing, can take 5 to 7 days to recover from. During the recovery process, you can expect redness, sensitivity, flaking, peeling, and bronzing.
When Can I Wear Makeup After Laser Skin Resurfacing?
You can wear makeup as soon as your skin has healed. For more intensive resurfacing treatments, you will likely need to postpone wearing makeup for 1 to 2 weeks. For gentle treatments, you may be able to wear makeup after just a day or so.
How Long Should I Wait Between Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatments?
It’s best to wait about 4 to 6 weeks between laser skin treatments. This gives your skin plenty of time to heal before your next session. Between treatments, you’ll need to avoid sun exposure and wear plenty of SPF as your skin will be especially sensitive to UV rays.
How Many Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatments Will I Need?
If you opt for a more aggressive treatment, you may only need a single session to see great results. If you have a gentler treatment done, you may need a series of 2 to 5 treatments for the best outcome.
When Will I See Results After Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Results often begin to show after about a week. These results will continue to improve over the next several weeks as new collagen production rejuvenates your skin tone, texture, and coloration.
