Do you have pesky wrinkles at the corners of your eyes even when you’re not smiling or squinting? Known as crow’s feet, these lines are typically among the earliest signs of aging and a common concern among our cosmetic dermatology patients. Most of these patients know that injectables can minimize the appearance of crow’s feet but aren’t sure if they need a dermal filler such as JUVÉDERM® or BOTOX injections at our London, Ontario dermatology clinic.
Dermal fillers and BOTOX target different types of wrinkles. Fine lines such as crow’s feet develop over the years as we squint, smile, and change expressions in other ways. This is also how vertical worry lines (the “11s”) form between our eyes. Each time we change expressions, the skin folds and then relaxes. When we’re younger, the skin returns to a smooth appearance. As we get older, though, the skin loses its elasticity, and the lines remain even when our faces are at rest.
BOTOX injections work by temporarily preventing the muscles used in these areas from moving, so the skin appears smoother. It’s important to have a skilled injector perform these treatments so the results look natural and avoid a “frozen” appearance.
Fillers, on the other hand, target wrinkles and folds caused by the loss of facial volume as we lose fat and bone density. Fillers are used in various areas of the face, such as the cheeks and around the mouth, to create a more youthful appearance.
At DermEffects, we often combine BOTOX and dermal filler injections because faces tend to develop both types of wrinkles at the same time. If you’re noticing signs of aging and want to regain a more youthful appearance, request a consultation with Dr. Wei Jing Loo using the online form or call us at (519) 472-2929 to schedule an appointment.
