Dr. Loo’s passion for art and her commitment to helping others inspires her to donate works of her art to benefit local charities.
As an artist and dermatologist raising a family in London, Ontario, Dr. Wei Jing Loo is thankful to have opportunities to help community organizations and causes. From her inspired renovation of the former Hyde Park United Church, to the creation and donation of remarkable watercolour paintings, Dr. Loo’s aesthetic vision has affected numerous individuals and groups throughout the London community.

Renovation of a Beloved Church
When Dr. Loo decided to start a private practice, she learned that Hyde Park United Church was being sold by the congregation. Other offers to buy the sanctuary and Sunday school classrooms included plans to demolish the buildings. Dr. Loo wanted to save the church — built in 1876 — and renovate it, re-purposing much of the interior materials. “Having lived in the United Kingdom,” says Dr. Loo, “you learn to value architecture and the preservation of old buildings.”
Much of what couldn’t be used was either recycled or donated to Habitat for Humanity, including the complete interior staircase. The renovation included energy-efficient heating. Dr. Loo used church pews for seating in the lobby and personally oversaw the interior design. Her soothing watercolours and silk paintings create splashes of color throughout the facility.
The renovation took 7 months and Dr. Loo opened DermEffects in January 2012. The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario recognized her efforts by honoring Dr. Loo with its Heritage Award.

- United Way, London
- New Canvas of Life: The Art of Transplantation, London Health Sciences Centre Multi-Organ Transplant Program (proceeds donated to London’s organ transplant program).
- Montessori Academy of London
Dr. Loo’s art incorporates leftover paints, tiles, artifacts from her work life, and small treasures, such as sea glass, pebbles and driftwood, found on her travels with her husband and children. Her artwork speaks to the communion of life and art, and she feels blessed to be able to give back to the community in this way.
