Why Choose Laser Hair Removal
Few women look forward to shaving almost every day to keep their legs and underarms smooth. Using tweezers to pluck eyebrows is equally undesirable. Men with hairy backs or chests sometimes endure painful waxing treatments.
A top choice for many men and women, laser hair removal treatments provide an effective, long-term solution with minimal discomfort. Additionally, you can bypass the hassle and mess of other hair removal options, along with the long-term costs of waxing and razors. These treatments are an ideal complement to nonsurgical body contouring with truSculpt®.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
The laser emits pulses of energy lasting only milliseconds, which bypass the skin and are absorbed by the pigment in the hair. That energy is transmitted to the hair follicle; this damages or destroys the follicle, stopping or greatly reducing its ability to grow hair.
What Are the Different Types of Lasers Used for Hair Removal?
We use the following 2 different laser systems for our laser hair removal procedures:
- ProWave™: Approved by the FDA for permanent hair reduction, the ProWave laser system is especially effective for quickly treating larger areas, such as legs and the back. Because laser energy targets the melanin in the hair shaft during the follicle’s growth phase, multiple treatments are needed to achieve optimal results. It typically takes 6 to 8 treatments scheduled 2 to 3 months apart to get these results. The ProWave laser targets brown or black hair on patients with light-colored skin.
- Nd: YAG 1064 nm: This laser can safely reduce hair on patients with darker skin when operated by a highly trained provider such as those at DermEffects. Similar to the ProWave, the Nd: YAG laser requires multiple treatments to get the desired hair reduction results.
How Long Does It Take To Recover From Laser Hair Removal?
There is typically no downtime following laser hair removal treatments. You can immediately return to work or other normal activities. Even though most patients experience little discomfort during the procedure—the sensation is often compared to having a rubber band snapped on your skin—some patients briefly apply ice packs to the treatment area. It’s important to apply sunscreen to exposed treatment areas after undergoing laser hair removal procedures. Redness or irritation typically resolves quickly.
Why Is My Hair Growing Back After Laser Hair Removal?
After your initial hair removal treatment, you’ll typically see hair start to grow again within days of the procedure. This is to be expected because hair grows in phases, and not all follicles are active during treatment. That’s why multiple treatments are needed to make sure as many active hair follicles as possible are exposed to the laser during the active growth phase.
